Silver batteries differ from alkaline ones in a higher voltage level (1.55V compared to 1.5V in alkaline batteries) and the construction of the battery itself: in silver batteries the cathode is silver oxide and the anode is zinc. In alkaline batteries, the cathode is made of manganese dioxide and the anode is made of zinc oxide. For both types of batteries, the electrolyte is potassium hydroxide.

Silver batteries last longer than alkaline batteries, therefore they are often used in devices such as watches, calculators, counters and other electronic devices. They have the highest capacity to weight ratio.
